Sunday Health Tip: Homeopathy for Insomnia

I was awake this morning at 1:49am. And still awake at 2:53am. And yet more pitifully, at 3:28am. You see, I nurse my little girl to sleep. And it takes so long sometimes that it’s 10pm by the time she’s finally in la-la-land. You might say, “What’s the problem? You can just go to sleep after that. It’s plenty early.” The problem is, at 10pm I feel robbed of my whole night. So I come out into the living room and flop onto the couch next to the hubby and get on the computer, blog, read a chapter from the … Continue reading

A Recipe for an Immunity-Boosting Breakfast

Yesterday, I shared some of Dr. Marcel Hernandez’s wisdom for how to bolster your child’s immune system naturally. But I forgot to share a recipe he gave me for a breakfast that helps boost your child’s immunity (developed by Dr. Bruce Millman, ND), so I am back to remedy that omission today. First, I should preface by saying that Dr. Marcel believes our modern American diet, which is high in refined carbohydrates, wreaks havoc on our bodies’ digestive and elimination systems. And a healthy elimination system that effectively removes waste materials and toxins from the body is crucially important to … Continue reading

Advice from Dr. Marcel Hernandez, ND: How to Support Your Child’s Immune System

I want to thank Dr. Marcel Hernandez of Pacific Naturopathic for his FREE advice to me on how to support children’s immune systems. His wisdom is much too valuable not to share with everyone, so I am disseminating it in the hopes that my fellow holistic Moms can use these techniques to bolster their child’s all-important immunity. Nutrition: Not surprisingly, holistic physicians like NDs use food as the first line of defense. Dr. Marcel would like to see us Moms feed our children only whole foods and grains, organic whenever possible. He reminds us that many children have difficulty digesting … Continue reading

Goodbye, Borders. I will miss you.

When I got this letter in my email account, I felt the wind rush out of me, as surely as if I had been punched in the gut. I also felt a tendril of guilt, because I am quite certain that I am part of the reason Borders failed. For one thing, I like shopping at Amazon.com, and have transferred most of my book purchases there. For another, I have read exclusively by Kindle since Kindles first came out, especially now that I have a Kindle app on my iPod and on my Smartphone and can read in the dark. … Continue reading

Sunday Health Tip: Consider Seeing a Naturopath (ND)

If, like me, you’re a Mom who gravitates towards natural healing methods and trying the least-invasive, most holistic cures first for yourself, your child(ren), and your spouse, then you might be interested in exploring finding a doctor of Naturopathic medicine (an ND) to help you optimize your family’s health and wellness. What is Naturopathic medicine, you ask? Never heard of such a thing? Well, that’s not too surprising, as Naturopathic medicine is only about 100 years old. But despite that, Naturopathy is based on one of the oldest healing principles in medicine (it dates all the way back to Hippocrates), … Continue reading

A Recycled Post: Pregnancy is an Excuse for EVERYTHING.

I forgot that I had started a blog called, “Mare Becomes a Mom” on Blogspot in the few weeks between starting my maternity leave and actually having the baby. For some reason, it occurred to me to go back and look at it last night and I started laughing out loud at some of the things I had written. It turns out pregnancy does addle the brain…and it makes for some hilarious reading, too. Just thought I’d share. This one was about how I was using pregnancy as an excuse for everything I said and did. I gotta admit, I’ve … Continue reading

Wordless Wednesdays: Baby Discovers Daddy’s Underwear

My husband is going to kill me for posting these pics. But I can’t worry about that right now. I found these in my iPod recently and they were so hilarious, I just had to share. I guess the Little Apple somehow got hold of one of her Daddy’s Ralph Laurens and started to improvise… What’s this? I’ve never seen this before. I’d better see if it’ll go over my head. Hmm, how come that didn’t work? Let me rethink this. Whee! Success! It’s going over my head now…where it clearly belongs!

A Tough Weekend in Holistic Mommy-land

Sometimes the path of the Holistic Mother is a lonely one, filled with self-doubt and confusion and exhaustion. This is especially true when your baby is sick, as mine was this past week and weekend. She had what sounded and looked like croup – AGAIN. Her cough started on Monday and worsened Tuesday and Wednesday. On those nights, she coughed so hard that it woke her up 8-9 times in the course of the night. She was hoarse and phlegmy, and when she breathed, it was fast and labored and she sounded like a sea lion. I say that the … Continue reading

Sunday Health Tip: How to Use a Dry Brush for a Good Immune System and Great Skin

For seven years I owned a wellness spa, and while it had its ups and downs, one of the “ups” was that I got daily lessons in natural health and learned easy, effective ways to support my immune system. One of my favorite techniques for immune system support was (and IS) dry brushing. In fact, dry brushing has so many benefits and is so good for the immune system that I mandated that all of my therapists perform this technique on clients as part of every body treatment that occurred at my spa! (In your mind, please play dramatic, triumphant … Continue reading
