Natural Remedies for UTIs (Bladder Infections)
Yesterday, I had to explain to a male co-worker why women get urinary tract infections (aka bladder infections or “UTIs”) more often than men. “Ahem,” I stuttered, “Not sure how to put this…especially in an open cubicle workspace…but it has to do with the – the – the differences in our, um, well, our anatomies.” “Oh,” he said. Then, “OH!” I could see the light bulb shining brightly over his head. “Okay, say no more.” I started chuckling a bit to myself, and then a light bulb came on over my head as well. It hit me that this would … Continue reading

Natural Beauty Secrets: The Economics of Making Your Own Aromatherapy Toner
A while back, I shared with you how to make your own aromatherapy facial toners at home. While I was away in Anaheim for Expo West 2012, I got a fantastic question/comment from Paige, which read: How long do you think the toner you mentioned at the bottom would last? (the one you use) And also where do you purchase your oils from and what do you think the average price is for you to make that toner? Thank you! But alas! It is almost the end of March 2012, and I have not yet answered her. Shame on me! … Continue reading

Product Review & Giveaway: 1Hour Break Natural Stress Relief Remedy
As a trained herbalist, I am always glad when people formulate products based on good science and high-quality, organic herbs. As a lazy herbalist, I am always glad when it’s “other people” doing it, and not me. As a Mom of a little one who works full-time outside of the home, I could always use some stress relief. As a Mom with taste buds, I would love it if the product actually tasted good…but this is by no means a deal-breaker. Meaning, if it tasted bad, but it worked well, I would still use it. And that is exactly how … Continue reading
Hot Yoga: What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger. And Hopefully, Thinner.
Date: March 18, 2012 Time: 9:49am Weight: 150.2 pounds. But this might not be an entirely fair weigh-in, as I’d just woken up and had nothing to eat yet, so it might be considered “cheating.” It has been two weeks now since my first foray into hot yoga and my public vow to lose weight. I’ve gone to 6 hot yoga sessions now in total, and while I am able to attempt more poses (note: the key word is “attempt”), I still cannot stick my ankle behind my ears or do a headstand/handstand. However, I HAVE lost 2-3 pounds since … Continue reading

Best of Expo West 2012 Roundup: Mare’s Favorite Kids Products
Not everything at Expo West 2012 was for eating or drinking. Lucky for us natural mothers, the natural health industry knows we are trying to raise natural children. This year’s Expo West featured several baby and children’s products that I would just LOVE to have in my medicine cabinet, travel bag, diaper bag, playroom, and home. Here they are, in no particular order (except the order in which they sprang to my brain): Best Kids’ Medicinal Line: Herbs for Kids. I really liked this range of herbal products formulated especially for kids by trained herbalist, Sunny Mavor. A lot of … Continue reading

Best of Expo West 2012 Roundup: Mare’s Favorite Beverages
It wasn’t all about the edibles at the recent Expo West 2012. There are also a ton of delicious potables coming to market…and here are some of my absolute favorites from the recent Expo West 2012 show in Anaheim, CA. Favorite Healthy Beverage: Sneaky Pete’s Naturally Oatstanding Beverage (pictured above). These yummy drinks help you “sneak” fiber into you and your kids’ diets. Made from an old family recipe that involves oats, each 12-ounce bottle of Sneaky Pete’s contains 3 grams of dietary oat fiber (2 grams of which are heart-supporting soluble fiber) and only 40 calories. The sweeteners are … Continue reading

Best of Expo West 2012 Roundup: Mare’s Favorite Foods
Natural mothers, rejoice! At the recent Expo West, there was an explosion of delectable and nutritious foods coming to market at a health store near you. I decided to pick out my favorites and share them with you here. Best Cheese Substitute: Teese Vegan Cheese. My main “beef” with most vegan and soy cheeses is that they don’t melt very well. Rather, they become somewhat hard and lumpy after heating, and I really don’t like that. In contrast, Teese vegan cheese melts extremely well – I tasted the one that is good for nacho sauce, and it was delish. It … Continue reading
Interesting Trends from Expo West 2012
I just got back last night from another pilgrimage to the Natural Products Expo West show, where the natural foods and natural health industry converge annually to stop traffic in Anaheim. Well, obviously, the purpose was not to stop traffic, but the size and scale of the show was and is such that traffic was, for all intents and purposes, stopped on Katella Avenue. My maiden voyage to Expo West was last year and it was…mind-blowing. So I determined to make my way there again this year – even if it meant leaving my little girl behind for a weekend … Continue reading

Disrespectful Toddler Part 2: She Told Her Daddy to “Zip It!” Too
I had myself quite a good laugh this morning at my husband’s expense. You see, a couple nights ago, when my daughter first told me to “Zip it!” by putting her little hand on my mouth, I told my husband and he did not believe me. “That’s impossible!” He said. “How could she know those words? We don’t talk like that.” Well, okay. This morning, I had gone to 6am Hot Yoga again (YES!! I have gone 3 days this week and am keeping up with my resolution to get back to optimal health) and when I got home, my … Continue reading
