Reader Question: Essential Oil Blend for Bumpy Skin?
I recently got this email from a reader, and because I still am not able to get comments on the most popular post I have ever written, I am continuing to respond to them via blog post so I can get them answered, and so other people can see my answers: I just discovered your site recently and finally finished reading through all the comments! Your explanations are very clear. I think it’s the most informative site on essential oils that I’ve come across. The only oil I’ve ever used is tea tree but I’d really like to try more. … Continue reading
A Natural Remedy for My Toddler’s Stomach Ache
Last weekend, my hubby and I took our Little Apple to Hobee’s, a wonderful chain of family-oriented restaurants here in northern California. She had not eaten much all day, so I expected her to go to town on her dinner. Before the food came out, however, she started clutching her tummy and whining to me, “Mommy, my stomach is so hungry.” I said, “Honey, just be patient. The food is coming out soon.” Thinking it was just hunger pangs, I didn’t really pay much attention to it at first. I figured I would just distract her until the food arrived, … Continue reading
My Guiltiest (and Most Expensive) Pleasure: Rose Essential Oil
The phrase “beer budget, champagne taste” is one that I am very familiar with, and one that could be said to be the canon of my life thus far. Back in my spa-owning days, when I didn’t even earn enough to buy toothpaste regularly, I would still scrimp and save until I could afford a Kate Spade purse. Or an Anthropologie skirt. Or a two-night stay at Calistoga Ranch. Yeah. That financial idiot was me. So it should come as no surprise to anyone that once I got into Aromatherapy and started falling in love with essential oils, the one … Continue reading
Yay! Her DIY Essential Oil Facial Oil Blend Worked!
I opened up my email this morning to find two very nice ones waiting for me. One was the announcement of the birth of my good friend’s second child this morning (2/2/13) at 12:19am – a daughter she named Maya. And the other was this email from a reader, which I have pasted below because it is so educational. Hi Mare! I’m writing to follow-up on an essential oil blend you recommended to me in mid August. There seems to be an issue with posting replies on the “how to make your own essential blend” page (as I know you’re aware … Continue reading
Aromatherapy for Balancing Hormones, Part 2
Boy, am I long-winded. I am still trying to address a question from one of my readers, K.L., about how to use aromatherapy to balance hormones. Last time, I talked about all the different ways to apply essential oils – both topically and internally – and today, I want to talk a little bit about what I would suggest for her specific issue of balancing hormones. For the sake of convenience, let me re-paste her question: Do you…have any information on essential oils and hormones? Specifically, I am wanting to know the best way to use them. Topically? Internally? Strictly … Continue reading

Aromatherapy for Balancing Hormones, Part 1
Recently, I got this email from a reader, and I thought I’d respond to it on my blog (since others are probably wondering the same thing): Hello! I ran across your blog while searching the internet for information on balancing my hormones using essential oils. Do you, in your vast knowledge of holistic living, have any information on essential oils and hormones? Specifically, I am wanting to know the best way to use them. Topically? Internally? Strictly aromatherapy? I can find all sorts of information on what oils are best for hormone balancing, but not much about the best delivery … Continue reading
Essential Oil Suppositories…Really?
When I first started studying Aromatherapy, I noticed there were a lot of mentions in my aromatherapy texts and in the general aromatherapeutic literature about essential oil suppositories and their use in Europe. I’ll be honest: at first I didn’t even know what a suppository was. I had to look it up on Wikipedia and realized that a suppository is a medicinal delivery mechanism…that you insert into your rectum or your vagina. I must be an especially squeamish person, because the thought of that used to really, really, REALLY gross me out. But one really good thing that all of these … Continue reading
My Favorite Essential Oil Blend for Immunity, and How to Use It
The last week of September 2012 was a rough week for me: my daughter went through almost seven days straight of coughing and periodic fever. She had a hard time sleeping because she would cough herself awake and cry, which in turn meant I had a hard time sleeping (as every mother knows). I tried to do the wet sock treatment on her, but she’s a two-year-old, so she was having none of it. She also wanted nothing to do with the Chamomile tea I kept passing to her (one of Dr. Corrine’s suggested cold and flu remedies for children), … Continue reading
“I’m 25, with dehydrated, sensitive skin and clogged pores…”
For some reason, I haven’t gotten comments in weeks. I’m not sure why this is, but I am beginning to think it’s a real problem, because I just got this email in my inbox: Hi Mare! I posted a reply on your “how to make your own essential blend” page but I must be doing something wrong because I can’t see my comment after I post it. So due to being very desperate for your feedback, I had to email you. I’m so sorry if this is inconvenient for you. So this is what I wrote on your page: I … Continue reading
Essential Oil Remedies for Itchy Mosquito Bites
I came back from China three weeks ago, where I had the pleasure of attending my brother’s wedding…and sleeping on my mother’s couch. I had forgotten how fun Shanghai is…as well as how mosquito-ridden. The first night, I did somehow remember to rub the couch down with lavender oil before I climbed onto it, so I was bite-free the next day. The second night, however, the night of my brother’s wedding, I came home very late and just plunked myself down onto the cool, comfortable leather without another thought. Big mistake. HUGE. I woke up the third day looking like … Continue reading
