An Idea for a Delicious Cold/Cough Remedy: Vegan Mexican Hot Chocolate?
As I mentioned earlier this week, my little girl is coughing again, and again I am attempting to expand my holistic medicine cabinet to find remedies to ease her symptoms. (There are only so many times a 20-month-old will agree to taking elderberry syrup before balking – and unfortunately, I think we have reached that limit). So I’ve been thinking, what about a nice Mexican hot chocolate as a cold remedy? I know, it sounds crazy. And I haven’t actually tried it yet. But hear me out for a second: it MIGHT work because a) the heat of the drink … Continue reading

Natural Remedies for Croup
At this point, I am an old hand when it comes to nursing a croupy child back to health. I think we are on Croup version 6.0 in my house – well, that depends on whether you count what I mistakenly thought was croup, but was actually whooping cough. As I type this, my daughter is coughing and sounding like a barking seal, it gets worse while she’s sleeping (or lying down, basically), and it gets worse at night. Last night was night 3, so if conventional wisdom is correct, she is over the worst of it, and we’ll be … Continue reading

Natural Remedies for Coughs in Babies
If you’re the mother of a child less than a year old, and your child develops a cough, what are you to do? That is the question that I found myself asking just five months into my baby’s life, when my mother-in-law moved out and we put our baby into day care. The week after, the little Apple started coughing. The reason that this is a dilemma is that a) the FDA warns against the dangers of using OTC cough medications in children under four years old (not that I would use conventional medicines anyway, as a naturally minded mama); … Continue reading

My entire household is sick. The problem is…
…I am the least sick. My husband has signs of the flu (fever and chills, alternating) and my little girl is coughing up a storm, and an almost 18-month-old can’t be expected to relieve me of any household burdens anyway. I have a sore throat and a runny nose, but since I am not laid out flat like my hubby, I get to be the one to take care of everybody tonight. I am flat-out exhausted. I don’t even know why I am sitting here blogging. There is a dull tiredness behind my eyes and a mild headache creeping in, … Continue reading

A Holistic Mama’s Confession: I’m Tempted to Take Antibiotics
I’ve had a cough since before Thanksgiving (11/24/11). My little girl got sick first, presenting classic croup symptoms on the Monday before T-Day, and not surprisingly, I followed soon after (there are only so many times you can withstand your baby coughing in your face before your immune system just throws in the towel). She got better within a week, but I went the other way. It was probably the combination of having whatever she had, plus not being able to rest because I had to take care of her. So here we are, it’s Tuesday, 12/6/11, and I’m still … Continue reading
Sunday Health Tip: Consider Homeopathic Constitutional Treatment for Whole Child Wellness
Lisette Narragon, CHC, BRCP, of Bay Area Homeopathy, is my daughter’s professional homeopathic consultant and my go-to person whenever the Little Apple’s health takes a dive. Recently I took my little one to Lisette for constitutional treatment, and I asked Lisette to write a short blog about what “constitutes” constitutional treatment in homeopathy. – Mare =============================================================================== Mare asked me the question, “What is homeopathic constitutional treatment and how does it differ from acute treatment?” The easy answer is: constitutional treatment focuses on chronic illness and overall health and vitality, while acute treatment focuses on whatever the child (or person) is … Continue reading
A Tough Weekend in Holistic Mommy-land
Sometimes the path of the Holistic Mother is a lonely one, filled with self-doubt and confusion and exhaustion. This is especially true when your baby is sick, as mine was this past week and weekend. She had what sounded and looked like croup – AGAIN. Her cough started on Monday and worsened Tuesday and Wednesday. On those nights, she coughed so hard that it woke her up 8-9 times in the course of the night. She was hoarse and phlegmy, and when she breathed, it was fast and labored and she sounded like a sea lion. I say that the … Continue reading
9-month checkup…Wish I were strong enough to be a NO-VAX Mom.
Took the little Apple in for her 9-month checkup on Friday with her new pediatrician. The little Apple tipped the scales at 20 pounds and 2 ounces (75th percentile) and measured 29 inches tall (90th percentile). Everybody, doctor and nurses, was delighted with her incredible thighs and sausage-link legs. Other than a few rough patches left over on her arms and legs from the hives she had last week, she is the picture of rosy health. (About that: I am thinking she might have very sensitive skin, the beginnings of eczema…will need to watch that closely). Since I had been … Continue reading
Baby coughing 3.0: Down in the dumps
For the third time in her life, my baby is coughing again. This time, it’s lasted 10 days (and counting). I’ve been feeling conflicted between the Holistic Mama method – which is to do nothing and let her own immune system overcome it – and the rush-to-the-doctor method. I rushed to the doctor yesterday morning, not trusting that her cough would go away on its own. It’s scary to watch your most precious one waking herself up and hacking away to the point of gagging. I just wanted the reassurance. But, I’ve also been conflicted about the economic repercussions of … Continue reading
Homeopathy and Whooping Cough
What is whooping cough? A contagious respiratory catarrhal disease characterized by paroxysmal cough and the classical whoop. Homeopathy can help with Whooping Cough! For the last 100 years, homeopaths have successfully treated whooping cough with homeopathic remedies. It is well documented in the homeopathic texts and I have also experienced success in treating this in my own practice. Even if you decide to take antibiotics, the remedies can reduce the severity of the cough and improve the overall energy of the person. The duration of the illness will then reduce as well. So it is not necessarily a choice between … Continue reading
