General musings about holistic parenting, natural parenting, attachment parenting, mothering, the highs (and lows) of motherhood, and being a holistic mother/mommy/mom/mama in general.

Finding the Balance Between “Holistic” and “Realistic”

scales of justice

I have a confession to make: This holistic Mama took antibiotics. This time, I wasn’t just tempted to take them. This time, I actually took them. I had been coughing since the end of September, when I went to China to see my brother get married (and to get eaten alive by mosquitoes). By the first week of December, I had landed in Vegas for business and my cough had still not healed; it had only gotten wetter and wetter, and phlegmier and phlegmier. (Apologies for the gross-itude, but it’s the truth). This was despite my having thrown the kitchen sink … Continue reading

Heartbroken about Newtown School Shooting

I have been crying since Friday. Yet another senseless shooting at a school. Yet another mark of shame for us Americans. Yet another cross for us to bear as a nation. Except this time, except this time, there were 20 children among the victims. Children! Innocent, sweet, beautiful, precious little children. I cannot even imagine what the parents and families of those 20 dead children and 6 dead adults must be feeling. If I am this devastated, if I am plunged into such darkness, what depths of grief and suffering must they be wading through? None of them, I am … Continue reading

Who am I kidding? I am not particularly holistic…

Confused Mom

The name of this blog is “Holistic Mamas.” I belong to the Holistic Moms Network. I know a lot about Aromatherapy and herbs and natural remedies. But if I take a good look at myself in the mirror, I am not particularly holistic. At all. And I am not being hard on myself. No, in fact, I have always been particularly good at letting myself off the hook. I look around at all the other Moms in the Holistic Moms chapter with me, and in comparison, I am decidedly UN-holistic. Why do I say this? Because many of the other … Continue reading

10 Things You Should Know about Raw Local Honey…and Why I’m Suddenly Thinking about Beekeeping

PszczoÅ?y na plastrze miodu

I recently learned that my co-worker and friend, Larry Bunka, keeps bees in his backyard. His kids finance their annual class trips through the sales of the honey his bees produce, and since he lives within 1.5 miles of me, his honey is truly “local” to us…and so, I bugged and begged and pleaded with him to bring in a few jars and sell them to me. He did, and I bought two jars off of him for $10. Wrapped around the jars was this very sweet, charming, and educational writeup about “Neighborhood Honey.” I asked Larry for permission to … Continue reading

Cool Infographic on Headaches: Types, Causes, & Remedies

Mount Sinai asked me to share this infographic about headaches. I found it really informative, and especially liked the remedies section, because it contains nothing about OTC medications. In fact, it warns that overuse of medications could lead to chronic headaches. Take a looksie: Source: Mount Sinai Medical Center

People Say the Meanest Things on Twitter

exPakistani

I do not agree with nor would I choose the Duggar family’s lifestyle for myself – the couple with 19 children and counting – but when I heard that Michelle Duggar had just miscarried yesterday (baby #20), I felt extremely sad for her. To an expectant mother looking forward to the birth of her new little bundle of joy, a miscarriage is devastating, whether that is her first child or her 100th child. So I was quite surprised at the comments I found on the Twitterverse under the hashtag #Duggar. There were a few comments expressing condolences, but most took … Continue reading

All in a Week’s Work: Got Rear-Ended, Rediscovered My SuperPower, Now I Gotta Get My Car Fixed

Bumper RearEnded

On Wednesday, November 16, I was stopped at a red light on my way to work. Suddenly, I felt and heard a big BOOM! from behind. Yep, I had just been rear-ended. My first car accident ever. I looked behind me in the rearview mirror and I saw a distraught-looking woman driver in the car behind me. I could tell she was distraught because she was in a WHAT-THE-F***-DID-I-JUST-DO pose (i.e., both hands up over her head, shock etched into her face). Wow, I thought to myself, I am so glad the baby was not in the car. Then I … Continue reading

This Holistic Mommy is a Serial Food Killer

Tried, and failed, to make Moist Grapefruit Cake, from Valerie Orsoni's Le Personal Coach.

I have an idea for a new show. Instead of CSI: Miami, it would be called, CSI: My Kitchen. The premise would be about food coroners doing post-mortems on failed dishes attempted by me (or other kitchen newbies) Every time I murder an entree or dessert, these guys would come around and explain to me where I went wrong, and what I needed to do better next time. If I really screwed up, they might arrest me and take me to food jail. And heck, it doesn’t have to be just my kitchen. I am sure there are other food … Continue reading

Home Remedies for Cluelessness? Stupidity?

I have always felt like I was missing something the rest of the world has. I don’t know what you would call it – “common sense,” “wisdom,” or more slangily, a “clue” – I just was born without it. I really do wish there were such a thing as home remedies for cluelessness or outright stupidity. I could certainly use some. When it comes to learning from a lecture or memorizing facts from a book, I do okay. In fact, I did more than okay in school – I did pretty well. But when it comes to common-sense things, I … Continue reading

How to Connect Jumper Cables…or, the Stuff A Man Knows

Men know stuff. I never doubted this, but it’s definitely different stuff than a woman knows. Like, a man always knows the make and model of a car, but if you asked me what kind of car so-and-so was driving, I would tell you, “A silver car,” and I would look at you funny if you didn’t think that information was sufficient. Also, the stuff men think we know (or don’t know) is quite illuminating. Case in point: two days ago, I made a boneheaded move and forgot to turn off my headlights and let my battery drain itself completely … Continue reading
