Natural Remedies for Croup
At this point, I am an old hand when it comes to nursing a croupy child back to health. I think we are on Croup version 6.0 in my house – well, that depends on whether you count what I mistakenly thought was croup, but was actually whooping cough. As I type this, my daughter is coughing and sounding like a barking seal, it gets worse while she’s sleeping (or lying down, basically), and it gets worse at night. Last night was night 3, so if conventional wisdom is correct, she is over the worst of it, and we’ll be … Continue reading

Sunday Health Tip: An Introduction to Flower Essences
I thought it was about time to introduce my readership to Flower Essences, so I asked Dr. Connie Hernandez, ND, to write an article about them. She used them as a healing tool to help me on my journey to fertility, and ever since, I’ve been fascinated by them. I did mention them in my post, “Natural Remedies for Grief,” but I thought it would take a real expert to do them justice. ===================================================================== Among the many types of remedies that we use as naturopathic doctors, flower essences are some of my favorites. Often people hear the words “flower essence” and … Continue reading
An Evolving Holistic Mama: It IS a Process
This past weekend, my little girl experienced the third fever of her life. I would grade myself a B- or C+ in terms of how I reacted and performed this time (the last time she developed a fever, I would give my behavior a D). On Saturday night/Sunday morning, the little Apple woke up around midnight, clapping and talking (nonsensical words, of course). While she lay happily looking up at the ceiling and stringing together made-up syllables and sounds, her parents tried miserably (and ultimately, unsuccessfully) to get back to sleep. I finally picked her up after half an hour … Continue reading

Shanghai’d!
We are safely in Shanghai, after a (mostly) uneventful plane ride. I’ve learned several things since getting on that China-bound plane, and have decided to list them according to my stream of consciousness: My baby is not one of those that sleeps on planes. She’s one of those that poops on planes. This time, she pooped twice. Big, yucky, up-the-back poopies that took both her Mom and Dad to change. She slept only 1.5 hours out of the 12 hour long flight, and since she wanted only Mommy the whole way here, Mommy didn’t get any sleep at all, either. … Continue reading

Sunday Health Tip: Consider Homeopathic Constitutional Treatment for Whole Child Wellness
Lisette Narragon, CHC, BRCP, of Bay Area Homeopathy, is my daughter’s professional homeopathic consultant and my go-to person whenever the Little Apple’s health takes a dive. Recently I took my little one to Lisette for constitutional treatment, and I asked Lisette to write a short blog about what “constitutes” constitutional treatment in homeopathy. – Mare =============================================================================== Mare asked me the question, “What is homeopathic constitutional treatment and how does it differ from acute treatment?” The easy answer is: constitutional treatment focuses on chronic illness and overall health and vitality, while acute treatment focuses on whatever the child (or person) is … Continue reading
Sunday Health Tip: Homeopathy for Insomnia
I was awake this morning at 1:49am. And still awake at 2:53am. And yet more pitifully, at 3:28am. You see, I nurse my little girl to sleep. And it takes so long sometimes that it’s 10pm by the time she’s finally in la-la-land. You might say, “What’s the problem? You can just go to sleep after that. It’s plenty early.” The problem is, at 10pm I feel robbed of my whole night. So I come out into the living room and flop onto the couch next to the hubby and get on the computer, blog, read a chapter from the … Continue reading

A Tough Weekend in Holistic Mommy-land
Sometimes the path of the Holistic Mother is a lonely one, filled with self-doubt and confusion and exhaustion. This is especially true when your baby is sick, as mine was this past week and weekend. She had what sounded and looked like croup – AGAIN. Her cough started on Monday and worsened Tuesday and Wednesday. On those nights, she coughed so hard that it woke her up 8-9 times in the course of the night. She was hoarse and phlegmy, and when she breathed, it was fast and labored and she sounded like a sea lion. I say that the … Continue reading
Who the heck first figured this out?
I was making my gratitude list today, and one item I put on the list was how thankful I am to have started down the path of learning about herbs, holistic medicine, aromatherapy, homeopathy, flower essences, etc., when a hilarious memory jumped into my mind. Last year, I had a bout of postpartum BPPV – Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. For ten weeks, I felt like I was walking around on the deck of a ship at sea. And not a big cruise ship, either. More like a dinghy. Traditional medicine did not work for me (how surprising!), so I went … Continue reading

A Holistic Mama’s First Aid Kit – Part 3
I’m baaaaaack. I’m not going to stop until I finish this, or else I’ll be talking about Holistic First Aid Kits until Kingdom Come. So get ready for a LOOOOONG post. Fever: Like diarrhea, fever in a child under 6 is pretty serious and needs medical attention (well, fever over 101 degrees). When my baby had a 100-degree fever, I didn’t take her in but tried a holistic remedy recommended by Dr. Kim Millman, MD, PhD, and it worked! Basically, I took a Calcium Lactate pill and dissolved it in water, then gave the baby a syringe full of the … Continue reading

A Holistic Mama’s First Aid Kit – Part 2
Were you glued to my blog feed for Part 2? Haha, I knew it. Continued from my last post, “A Holistic Mama’s First Aid Kit” – I’m still mentally doing a one-Mama brainstorm of what I would put in this kit. I would welcome your input, as always. Burns and scalds: Since I’ve already got Lavender in the kit, I’ll let it take care of the minor burns and scalds. And while I’ve blogged about the wonders of Cantharis 30C, I don’t want to make this kit too unwieldy. Cuts and scrapes: Lavender again. It’s the Zeus of the Aromatherapy … Continue reading
