9-month checkup…Wish I were strong enough to be a NO-VAX Mom.
Took the little Apple in for her 9-month checkup on Friday with her new pediatrician. The little Apple tipped the scales at 20 pounds and 2 ounces (75th percentile) and measured 29 inches tall (90th percentile). Everybody, doctor and nurses, was delighted with her incredible thighs and sausage-link legs. Other than a few rough patches left over on her arms and legs from the hives she had last week, she is the picture of rosy health. (About that: I am thinking she might have very sensitive skin, the beginnings of eczema…will need to watch that closely). Since I had been … Continue reading
Good remedies for minor burns
My mother-in-law is kind of a skeptic about all things holistic, aromatherapeutic, herbal, or just plain healthy. She likes to say, “Mare has a lot of concoctions.” But, since she’s living with us to help take care of the Little Apple, I want to take care of her, too. A couple months ago, she burned her finger by grabbing onto a hot pan (she missed the handle, basically). I heard a big, “Ow!” in the kitchen and went running. She was rinsing her finger in cold water when I found her. “I can help you with that, Mama,”I said. “Don’t … Continue reading

A good remedy for canker sores
I often joke that I have two babies, a Little one (the Apple) and a Big one (my hubby). My Big baby gets more canker sores (mouth ulcers) than anyone I’ve ever known. It annoys him to end. It annoys me too because it seems like every time I go to give him a quick peck on the lips, he says, “No, don’t kiss me – I have a sore.” And then he flips down his lip to show me the big, sometimes white, sometimes yellow, ALWAYS ugly, painful, throbbing mess. A very PAINFUL method that my mother used to … Continue reading

My Revised Bucket List
The 2007 movie, “The Bucket List,” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, inspired me to think about my own bucket list. In case you’re unfamiliar with the term, a “Bucket List” is a list of things you want to do before you “kick the bucket.” You can revise it any time you want according to your priorities, but it serves primarily as a reminder that a) life is finite and b) we’d better get busy living it. Since having a baby, my bucket list has definitely changed. It used to be populated mostly by places I wanted to go and … Continue reading
3 Teething Remedies for the Holistic Mama
Wow, all that drool and still no teeth yet for my 8-month-old. But we’ve got irritability, wakefulness, and both thumbs inserted into her mouth at all times. Last night, my little Apple even tried to stick her thumb into her mouth while she was breastfeeding. I laughed and laughed as I watched her try a variety of angles. It was so cute. What with all the midnight waking, I’ve built up an arsenal of teething remedies that I can reach for in my sleep. I’ve listed them in order of least effort to most effort – hey, that’s important to … Continue reading

Homeopathy for Menopause
Not that I’m in menopause yet (well, sometimes I feel 10 years older than I really am), but when I owned a day spa, I knew lots of clients who underwent hysterectomies and hormone replacement therapy that turned out to be unnecessary and more harmful than helpful. After talking to my favorite homeopath, Lisette Narragon, I learned that Homeopathy actually is a safe way to alleviate the symptoms of menopause, without using potentially harmful drugs. So, I asked her to come to Preston Wynne Spa and teach a class on this, and she said, “YES!” It’s queued up for April … Continue reading
Holistic protection against radiation clouds.
I’m not going to argue whether the radiation cloud from Japan will reach us or not. I am not qualified to discuss that topic whatsoever, and far more intelligent people than me are already doing so. What I do want to share is what I have learned from the great holistic and naturopathic practitioners in our area and their recommendations for how to protect yourself and your family from radiation. I have been following Dr. Kim Millman, MD, PhD, Dr. Ruth Bar-Shalom, ND, and Dr. Dorothy Ponton, DC, a chiropractor in the South Bay, and here’s what they have shared: … Continue reading
Homeopathy and Whooping Cough
What is whooping cough? A contagious respiratory catarrhal disease characterized by paroxysmal cough and the classical whoop. Homeopathy can help with Whooping Cough! For the last 100 years, homeopaths have successfully treated whooping cough with homeopathic remedies. It is well documented in the homeopathic texts and I have also experienced success in treating this in my own practice. Even if you decide to take antibiotics, the remedies can reduce the severity of the cough and improve the overall energy of the person. The duration of the illness will then reduce as well. So it is not necessarily a choice between … Continue reading

“Let go of sleep.”
“Just let go of the idea that you are going to be sleeping for the next 18 or so years,” said Pat, one of the lactation consultants who leads a weekly breastfeeding support group at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, in response to a question from one of the attendees about getting her baby to sleep through the night. At the time, my Aria was 4 weeks old, and I couldn’t even get her to latch on properly, let alone sleep through the night. So I laughed at Pat’s answer, thinking she must have been kidding. “I’m not kidding,” … Continue reading
