Happy 2nd birthday, Little Apple!
My little girl is two years old! How fast time flies…I remember the day I birthed her so clearly, and how fast my life changed forever. For the better, of course! Today, I surprised her with balloons as soon as she woke up. We told her, “Happy birthday!” And started singing to her. However, as we got to the part where we inserted her name, she said defiantly, “No! I want happy birthday…Daddy!” Meaning, she wanted us to sing Happy Birthday to Daddy, instead of herself. Some snippets of “conversations” we’ve had today, to remember for posterity (or just, ‘Hilarious … Continue reading

The Best Compliment EVER
Yesterday I went to get my haircut by Nikki, my long-time hairdresser of four years, and she said the nicest thing that anyone has ever said to me. A little backdrop: usually, we exchange pleasantries, and then she launches into her latest life drama (last haircut, it was all about trying to get along with her new mother-in-law). I usually lend a sympathetic and understanding ear – which means, she talks, and I make comforting noises like, “Mmm hmm” and “uh huh” and “That must feel very frustrating!” So yesterday, I asked her how things were going, fully ready to … Continue reading
Broke My Holistic Mama Rule
Okay, this is a picture of my little Apple eating cherries (haha – an “apple” eating “cherries”) that we picked off the tree at Chavez U-Pick Cherries this past Memorial Day weekend. I’m pretty sure this breaks the cardinal rule of most Holistic Mommies, which is to only let their child have organically grown fruits and vegetables. But, I just couldn’t resist: we were invited along by good friends, the cherries looked so fat and juicy and good right there on those trees, and my little one just loves them so much. Besides, I don’t know that they’re not organic…I … Continue reading
My life is a big piece of cake…literally.
I’ve been a bad, bad girl. I haven’t been blogging. I haven’t been exercising. But I HAVE been eating a lot of cake. Not too long ago, I told you about this 3-week gauntlet of celebrations that we do in my family every April/May. This year, my “problems” are compounded by the fact that I am a bridesmaid in a wedding that is happening this weekend, so I’ve had even more reason to…eat cake. My cake timeline: On April 26, my beloved hubby turned 45. We had CAKE. On April 28, I threw the bride a bridal shower/tea party. We … Continue reading

My Favorite 3 Weeks of the Year…they’re also my least healthy.
Yesterday, April 26, kicked off three weeks of almost continuous celebration for my little family. Yesterday was my husband’s birthday, you see, and May 10 is our wedding anniversary, and May 15 is my birthday. It’s an especially big year for us, because it is our 10th wedding anniversary, and I am turning 40! OMG, I can’t believe I just said that out loud. I mean, on paper. I mean, where everyone can see. But now that we have a little one, we also have Mother’s Day in there to celebrate, and on May 19, I am a bridesmaid in a … Continue reading

Wordless Wednesdays: Lost in Translation (How NOT to Translate Chinese into English)
I was going through the pictures from our China trip yesterday, and I came across one that my husband took of a sign in an elevator in the apartment building where we stayed. I hope you laugh as uproariously as I did. Some things tend to get lost in translation! In particular, the three instructions in the elevator I find the funniest are: The Chinese version says: “When the elevator breaks down, please keep calm and ring the bell for help.” The English translation says: “When elevator breakdown please keep cool, rings the bell to pray for rescue.” Really? I … Continue reading
My Little Valentine: 18-Months Old and Happy
My little girl is 18 months old now and thriving. Each and every day she surprises me with new words and new behaviors. I can’t believe how fast she’s growing and changing – it’s literally happening right before my eyes! She’s talking a lot now – we’ve counted about 80 or 90 words total across both Mandarin Chinese and English, and she’s understanding even more. When I tell her to get me her socks, she dutifully trots over and brings them back to me. When I tell her to go give her daddy a hug, she goes running over to … Continue reading
