Help! Is My Toddler “Disrespecting” Me ALREADY?
Last night, around 8:53pm, about 1 hour and 53 minutes after she was supposed to be in bed and falling asleep, my Little Apple said to me, “Sing.” So I started singing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” Then, about two lines in, she put her chubby little fingers on my mouth and said, “Zip it.” WHAT?! I could hardly believe that a 19-month-old would or could say such a thing. I mean, I kind of expect that kind of thing when she’s…I don’t know…13 or something. But she’s not even 2. So I figured, I must have just misheard her. She … Continue reading

Oh, no. I spoke too soon. The tantrums have started…
Last week, I proudly blogged about my little Apple’s cheerful and sweet disposition. The weekend immediately after that, she started throwing tantrums. I’d never seen anything like it before – my heretofore angel sprawled out on the floor, screaming and crying and banging her head against the ground. She would sob so hard that she started making gagging sounds, like she was about to vomit. I looked at my husband the first time she did this (I think it was because we tried to change her diaper, and she wanted to walk around with poopie-bottom some more), and told him, … Continue reading

My Little Valentine: 18-Months Old and Happy
My little girl is 18 months old now and thriving. Each and every day she surprises me with new words and new behaviors. I can’t believe how fast she’s growing and changing – it’s literally happening right before my eyes! She’s talking a lot now – we’ve counted about 80 or 90 words total across both Mandarin Chinese and English, and she’s understanding even more. When I tell her to get me her socks, she dutifully trots over and brings them back to me. When I tell her to go give her daddy a hug, she goes running over to … Continue reading

A Mommy Blogger Taking Heat for Publicly Admitting Loving One Child More Than the Other
Okay, where have I been? I only yesterday found out about and read Kate Tiejte’s controversial March 2011 post, Mom Confession: I Think I Love My Son a Little Bit More. I have never seen such raw, brutal honesty in a mommy blogger before, and boy, is she taking a ton of heat for said honesty. If you haven’t read the post, I suggest you read that as well as her follow-up post, “I’m Not a Perfect Mother,” wherein she does a tiny bit of backpedaling and tries to flesh out a fuller context for her original post, which has … Continue reading
Musings from an “Old” Mom
I got pregnant at age 37 and had my baby girl at age 38. I remember the first time I learned that I was considered “AMA:” I had gone to my OB’s office for one of my checkups, and her medical assistant told me that because I was over age 35, I was deemed to be of “Advanced Maternal Age” and therefore a “higher risk pregnancy.” I looked at her cockeyed and said, “Whatchoo talkin’ bout, Willis?” I was trying to be funny by hearkening back to Gary Coleman’s famous line from the television show, “Different Strokes.” Except, she was … Continue reading
Holistic Mamas Wins Top 115 Parenting Blogs Award from eCollegeFinder!
Yay, my blog was chosen by eCollegeFinder as one of the Top 115 Parenting Blogs! I won something! How fabulous! I have to admit, blogging is not easy. Sometimes it feels like you’ve acquired a ravenously hungry pet that requires constant feeding and attention. But I have stuck with it for over a year now and I feel supremely honored and gratified that there are people out there paying attention to little old me. But, back to the matter at hand…my award! Thank you very much, eCollegeFinder, for validating my blog. Now, who is eCollegeFinder anyway? It looks like they … Continue reading

A Holistic Mama Making a Difference: Heather Hamilton & Zoe Organics
It really is a small world. Heather Hamilton and I were only two degrees of separation apart, connected via her sister-in-law, who was also my dentist: Dr. Suzanne Hamilton. Dr. Hamilton passed away suddenly and tragically in January of 2009, only 3 months after giving birth to a beautiful baby girl, Zoe. Although I had only known Dr. Hamilton a short time, she had touched my life more profoundly than I knew, for I grieved her deeply. In fact, that is how Heather Hamilton found me, through a tribute I had written for Dr. Hamilton on an old, old blog. … Continue reading
Home Remedies for Cluelessness? Stupidity?
I have always felt like I was missing something the rest of the world has. I don’t know what you would call it – “common sense,” “wisdom,” or more slangily, a “clue” – I just was born without it. I really do wish there were such a thing as home remedies for cluelessness or outright stupidity. I could certainly use some. When it comes to learning from a lecture or memorizing facts from a book, I do okay. In fact, I did more than okay in school – I did pretty well. But when it comes to common-sense things, I … Continue reading

I’m sorry, I lied.
I feel guilty because I lied in my blog post yesterday. Not about laying awake at night until 3:28am, and not about the effectiveness of homeopathy (Coffea cruda 30C) in solving my insomnia. Those were both entirely too true. What I lied about was the reason I was lying awake at night – I had said I was making a long internal to-do list for my daughter’s birthday/tea party, but really….we just showed up at Lisa’s Tea Treasures in Santana Row and ate scones and cucumber sandwiches and drank Earl Grey. Why would I need to make an internal to-do … Continue reading
