On the other hand, my Blueberry Cashew Milk was a BUST.
Emboldened by my success at making almond milk last weekend, I decided to branch out and try some of the other modified recipes by Dr. Marcel. The first one I whipped up was “Blueberry Cashew Milk,” ’cause it sounded mm mm good (recipe is below). As you can tell from my title, though, it didn’t pan out too well. Not because it wasn’t delicious…it tasted GREAT! However, I couldn’t get my little girl to drink it, no matter what or how I tried. The first time I gave it to her, she took a few sips, then made a face … Continue reading

Holy No-Cow! I Made My First Nut Milk Today.
I am not one of those Moms who is talented in the kitchen. In fact, I think I’ve made it pretty clear that I have no cooking ability whatsoever, and that I could even be considered to be a food murderer. But when Dr. Ben Kim’s most recent newsletter hit my inbox the other day, the title of which was, “One Food Group That Should Be Avoided,” I knew I had to put aside my past culinary failures and do something different. By the way, if you’re not on his newsletter, I strongly suggest you sign up – it is … Continue reading

My Little Seaweed Monster; or How to Bribe Your Toddler (Mine, Anyway)
My little girl is approaching 16 months, and she’s got about 25 to 30 words total across Mandarin Chinese and English. She says, “Hi,” “Up,” “All done,” “Mama,” “Daddy,” “Hello,” “Duck,” “Sit,” “Eat,” “More,” “Poo-poo,” “Pee-pee,” “Tea,” and “Lola” (which means grandmother, in Tagalog). Her absolute, all-time favorite word, though, is “No!” This is how she uses it: Honey, will you sit? Mommy is going to feed you. “NO!” Sweetheart, let’s get back in the stroller so we can go home. “NO!” Mommy is too tired to give you “Nay Nay” (breasts, in Mandarin). “NO! NAY NAY!” Want some water? … Continue reading
Baby Expenditures: Splurge vs. Save? A Visual Guide
Ask Dr. Marcel: When and what solid foods do I introduce to my baby?
Dear Dr. Marcel, I know that it is best to feed the baby breastmilk for the first 6 months and to introduce solid foods after that point, but I can’t find any specific information on WHAT solid foods to introduce and WHEN. Can you help? After 6 months, this is the food introduction schedule that I suggest. If you’d like to download a .pdf file of this schedule, please sign up for the Holistic Mamas e-mail list and it will be made available to you. 6 Months 9 Months 12 Months 18 Months 24 Months 2-3 Years Mother’s milk Avocado … Continue reading
A Recipe for an Immunity-Boosting Breakfast
Yesterday, I shared some of Dr. Marcel Hernandez’s wisdom for how to bolster your child’s immune system naturally. But I forgot to share a recipe he gave me for a breakfast that helps boost your child’s immunity (developed by Dr. Bruce Millman, ND), so I am back to remedy that omission today. First, I should preface by saying that Dr. Marcel believes our modern American diet, which is high in refined carbohydrates, wreaks havoc on our bodies’ digestive and elimination systems. And a healthy elimination system that effectively removes waste materials and toxins from the body is crucially important to … Continue reading
Need ideas for baby food…for a picky eater!
I downloaded “The Unhealthy Truth” by Robyn O’Brien onto my Kindle, and what I’ve read so far has scared the heck out of me. So now I’ve resolved to make my own baby food with organic fruits and vegetables…and I realize that I don’t know what I am doing, being a cooking idiot and all. Yes, me, the corporate ladder-climbing woman who once wore her kitchen ignorance as a badge of honor is now humbled and motivated to be a conscientious Mom. Since my baby started solids, I have been buying her organic baby foods in jars and patting myself … Continue reading

Baby + Hives + Irritability = Worried Mama
We took the little Apple to brunch yesterday with long-lost friends. I was hoping she’d behave like her normal self – cheerful, happy, and giggly – but she acted fussy and irritable the whole time. When we got home, I noticed raised, red blotches on the underside of her chubby little arms. Worried that it was the heat, I changed her into shorts and a sleeveless top. She was so uncomfortable that she skipped her afternoon nap entirely. When she finally fell asleep at 4:30pm, my husband and I figured we could leave her with my mother-in-law and sneak off … Continue reading

3 Teething Remedies for the Holistic Mama
Wow, all that drool and still no teeth yet for my 8-month-old. But we’ve got irritability, wakefulness, and both thumbs inserted into her mouth at all times. Last night, my little Apple even tried to stick her thumb into her mouth while she was breastfeeding. I laughed and laughed as I watched her try a variety of angles. It was so cute. What with all the midnight waking, I’ve built up an arsenal of teething remedies that I can reach for in my sleep. I’ve listed them in order of least effort to most effort – hey, that’s important to … Continue reading
