A Holistic Mama’s Vacillations & Dr. Marcel’s Calcium Content of Foods Chart

CalciumChart

It’s hard to know what to do sometimes as a holistic Mama. Sometimes I feel like a moth in the wind, blown this way and that by whichever strongly worded article I am reading at the time. Case in point: the all-important question of what kind of milk my toddler should be drinking. Boy, it’s been a tough and confusing journey thus far. On the one hand, I want to stick to my guns and avoid feeding my baby pasteurized dairy, as Dr. Ben Kim strongly suggests. In a subsequent newsletter, he also warns that dairy contributes “to unnecessary ear … Continue reading

Ask Dr. Corrine: What Are Some Good Natural Remedies for Helping My Child Conquer Colds and Flus?

Dr. Corrine Wang, ND

Yup, it’s that time of year again. The school year and fall season are in high gear, and today I woke up with that yucky, slightly painful tickle at the back of my throat. So, I decided to ask Dr. Corrine Wang, a naturopathic physician focused on resolving childhood allergies, asthmas, and ADHD, to weigh in on what we can do as Moms during this time to help prevent our kids from getting sick. Or if they do fall ill, how can we Moms alleviate their symptoms and help them get well as quickly as possible? She came back with … Continue reading

The Importance of Vitamin D…Don’t Be Deficient (Like Me!)

I found this old post on my old blog, “Herban Wisdom.” The below was published September 2, 2009, when my husband and I were in the 5th year of our journey to get pregnant. Needless to say, we were feeling frustrated, helpless, and even somewhat desperate. I was in the middle of being treated by Dr. Connie Hernandez, ND, of Pacific Naturopathic (whose praises I’ve sung many times in my current blog). Little did I know that we were going to conceive our daughter naturally within two months of this post, and that by September 2, 2010 – exactly one … Continue reading

“We can’t all be cows.”

This witty statement was “uddered” by moi in the kitchen last night. At least, I thought it was witty until my husband quipped: “As opposed to some of us, who can be cows?” Context: I was telling him that my milk supply was dropping again, as we have completely run out of frozen breastmilk and our baby will have to be supplemented with formula again this week. And he was asking me, “Are you beating yourself up about this again?” To which I replied by shrugging and making the aforementioned observation that not all of us are lucky enough to … Continue reading

Volunteering at League of Angels, for Vitamin Angels

So I left my baby girl for a night to fly down to Anaheim to volunteer at the Vitamin Angels event Thursday night and to attend the Natural Products Expo West convention (which I will blog more about tomorrow). Although it was hard for me to spend a night away from my little Apple (my nickname for Aria, because of her apple-y cheeks that are yummy enough to bite), it is a cause so near and dear to my heart that I could not resist. Ever since Aria was born, my heart has been swollen with love. Truly. I feel … Continue reading

Wow, got laid out flat by some kind of virus.

It’s a good thing I just recently blogged about Zinc lozenges and how they can “shorten duration and severity of a cold.” I now have occasion to know that they work! Yes, I who possesses the alleged steel immune system, of the constant boasting that “I NEVER get sick,” of the never-ending taunting of others who do frequently get sick, I got sick AGAIN!! Dang, it’s like karma came along and said, “Hey, guess what? I AM a bitch! And all that comeuppance you got comin’ to ya with all your previous boasting, you get to pay for that in … Continue reading

ConsumerLab is the best investment EVER

I’m not getting any money for promoting ConsumerLab.com. They have no idea who I am, and anyway, this blog is still a podunk blog read only by myself and a few avid friends. But, I am blogging this as a public service announcement because I think ConsumerLab’s service is well worth the $30 or so a year that I pay for it. ConsumerLab basically tests vitamins and supplements to make sure they deliver what they say they do. Often they find that certain products do not have the dosage claimed, and less frequently (thank God!), they find that certain ones … Continue reading

How to Get Better Bones

I set up a Bone Health/Osteoporosis workshop tonight at Preston Wynne with holistic physician and Board-certified Internist, Dr. Kim Millman, MD, PhD. I brought my mother-in-law along because I wanted her to hear why taking Actonel was potentially harming, not helping, her. And, I wanted to spread the wisdom to everyone else out there who is concerned about osteoporosis/osteopenia, or who knows someone on Boniva/Fosamax/other bisphosphonates, or who just wants to be proactive about getting healthier bones. So, I am offering my summary of the event for everyone’s benefit. The key takeaways tonight (for me) were: Our body’s bone formation … Continue reading
