I don’t usually put up guest blog posts by people I don’t know, but this piece was marketed to me and I had been in the mindset of looking for natural remedies for gum disease anyway, so I figured I would post it in case it was useful to anyone else as well. – Mare

Gum disease claims the oral health of most Americans at some point in their adult lives.  But gum disease can be prevented by following some of the following a few simple methods. Many of the ways in which you can protect your oral health and prevent gum disease are also totally natural, which means you can enjoy good dental hygiene without resorting to harsh chemicals.

One of the most important things to do in order to prevent or treat the early stages of gum disease is to ensure that you follow a strict dental hygiene routine at home. This should involve brushing your teeth after each meal as well as using dental floss to get rid of food stuck between the teeth and rinsing out the mouth with a mouthwash.

As well as these daily measures you can further protect your teeth and gums by:

  • Taking vitamins

Unless you follow the ideal diet, then you are likely to be missing your recommended daily intake of all your vitamins and minerals. With this in mind it is a great idea to supplement your diet by taking vitamins. For strong teeth and gums that are free of gum disease, you should get extra vitamin C and D.

Vitamin C is wonderful at protecting your gums and an important nutrient for fighting infection. Vitamin D is a natural anti-inflammatory and is known for preventing diseased gums from bleeding. You can get your vitamin C fix from citrus fruits and vitamin D from sunlight and oily fish. If you feel that you may not be getting enough, then you can buy a vitamin supplement.

  • Drinking fresh juices

Get busy juicing in order to get all those extra nutrients into your diet. There are particular juices that you should try out – fresh orange juice, pineapple or lemonade. These are filled with vitamins to protect your oral health naturally. Cranberry juice is your best friend when you want to protect your oral health. It contains antibacterial properties that also provide a protective shield from bacteria.

  • Using Herbs

There are many herbs that are beneficial for your teeth and gums and can protect against gum disease, reduce inflammation of the gums or reverse infection. Some of these include:

  • Neem
  • Aloe Vera
  • Peppermint
  • Tea tree

There are some dental products that you can now buy that include these natural herbs to look after your oral health.

In addition to the advice above, make sure that you visit your dentist every six months for a clean and to have them check for the signs of early gum disease.

OraMD is a highly regarded natural product that contains peppermint, spearmint or almond and can effectively remove bacteria and plaque. This product also offers a 4-Step Oral Hygiene Program in order to maximize your oral health and gum disease treatment and minimize your chances of ever developing gum disease.
