Natural Remedies for Croup

Apple-Runny-Nose

At this point, I am an old hand when it comes to nursing a croupy child back to health. I think we are on Croup version 6.0 in my house – well, that depends on whether you count what I mistakenly thought was croup, but was actually whooping cough. As I type this, my daughter is coughing and sounding like a barking seal, it gets worse while she’s sleeping (or lying down, basically), and it gets worse at night. Last night was night 3, so if conventional wisdom is correct, she is over the worst of it, and we’ll be … Continue reading

Home Remedies for Vomiting Toddlers! Also, How to Make Your Own Pedialyte

My little girl drinking her Mommy's own homemade Pedialyte.

On Sunday morning, at about 2:12am (yes, I looked at the clock), I started hearing strange sounds emanating from my toddler. It almost sounded like a kettle of water was starting to boil over in her mouth. Then, out of nowhere, she began to upchuck all the contents of her stomach onto our bedsheets. Panicked, I turned on the lights and realized she was actually trying to swallow some of her own vomit – I guess my poor baby did not know that she was supposed to let it all out. There began a 24-hour period of mopping her up, … Continue reading

My Little Seaweed Monster; or How to Bribe Your Toddler (Mine, Anyway)

Toddler snacking on seaweed

My little girl is approaching 16 months, and she’s got about 25 to 30 words total across Mandarin Chinese and English. She says, “Hi,” “Up,” “All done,” “Mama,” “Daddy,” “Hello,” “Duck,” “Sit,” “Eat,” “More,” “Poo-poo,” “Pee-pee,” “Tea,” and “Lola” (which means grandmother, in Tagalog). Her absolute, all-time favorite word, though, is “No!” This is how she uses it: Honey, will you sit? Mommy is going to feed you. “NO!” Sweetheart, let’s get back in the stroller so we can go home. “NO!” Mommy is too tired to give you “Nay Nay” (breasts, in Mandarin). “NO! NAY NAY!” Want some water? … Continue reading

Ask Dr. Marcel: When and what solid foods do I introduce to my baby?

Dear Dr. Marcel, I know that it is best to feed the baby breastmilk for the first 6 months and to introduce solid foods after that point, but I can’t find any specific information on WHAT solid foods to introduce and WHEN. Can you help? After 6 months, this is the food introduction schedule that I suggest. If you’d like to download a .pdf file of this schedule, please sign up for the Holistic Mamas e-mail list and it will be made available to you. 6 Months 9 Months 12 Months 18 Months 24 Months 2-3 Years Mother’s milk Avocado … Continue reading

Night-Weaning and the Battle of the Breast: I’m Losing!

The little Apple is approaching 15 months old, and I am finally ready to night-wean her (as opposed to two months ago, when I realized I wanted to nurse her a little longer). After all, she’s over a year old, she’s walking and zipping around like crazy, and she can’t possibly be getting that much milk from me anyway, as I have not pumped since August 23rd (the day before we left for China). Also, I am finally getting tired of being tired. In a typical night, the little Apple will wake up 2-4 times to nurse, and it has … Continue reading

Ask Dr. Marcel: Help! Baby is Sensitive to Something I’m Eating!

Dear Dr. Marcel, I think my daughter, Olivia, is sensitive to something I’m eating. Every so often she will spit up a lot of digested milk. Most of the time she will spit up very little or not at all during the day. I’ve already stopped eating chocolate because I think that was a problem, but it is still happening. I think it’s maybe acidic food. I’ve stayed away from citrus fruits and tomatoes for a while, but then last night, I had tomatoes for dinner. Today, Olivia again spit up a lot of digested milk, but it was more … Continue reading

Ask Dr. Marcel: Natural Jet Lag Remedies for Babies

As a pediatric ND (Naturopathic physician), I have been asked by Mare to provide some advice to holistic mothers who are seeking out non-invasive solutions to their children’s health problems. I’ll start this week with Mare’s own question: Dr. Marcel, we’ve just come back from China, and my 1-year-old baby appears to be having a hard time with jet lag and getting back on our time zone. Any ideas for what we can do to help speed her transition? This is a tough one. Every child adjusts differently and it may take days to get back on schedule. Some parents … Continue reading
