Natural Remedies for Croup
At this point, I am an old hand when it comes to nursing a croupy child back to health. I think we are on Croup version 6.0 in my house – well, that depends on whether you count what I mistakenly thought was croup, but was actually whooping cough. As I type this, my daughter is coughing and sounding like a barking seal, it gets worse while she’s sleeping (or lying down, basically), and it gets worse at night. Last night was night 3, so if conventional wisdom is correct, she is over the worst of it, and we’ll be … Continue reading

Natural Remedies for Coughs in Babies
If you’re the mother of a child less than a year old, and your child develops a cough, what are you to do? That is the question that I found myself asking just five months into my baby’s life, when my mother-in-law moved out and we put our baby into day care. The week after, the little Apple started coughing. The reason that this is a dilemma is that a) the FDA warns against the dangers of using OTC cough medications in children under four years old (not that I would use conventional medicines anyway, as a naturally minded mama); … Continue reading

My baby had a fever. Again. Thank goodness for Homeopathy!
I had planned to write another post about Aromatherapy and skin care when I sat down to blog again, but real life got in the way. Real life, as in, we boarded a 4-hour plane ride back from our holiday vacation and my little one got very sick, very suddenly. Sigh. She was finally starting to get over her sniffle. I had posted about boosting her immune system with Elderberry syrup, wet sock treatments, and essential oil tissues, and they seemed to be working – she was on her way back to her usual state of optimal health. But then … Continue reading

One Year Ago Today, I Started This Blog. I guess it’s my Blog-o-versary?
Exactly a year ago today, I sat down to write my inaugural blog post on Holistic Mamas without really having a clear view of what I was hoping to accomplish. I think I just wanted to share the successes I’d had in using natural remedies to heal my 3-month old daughter’s reflux (in case there were other Moms also looking for a way out of using Zantac or Ranitidine on their precious babes). Today, as I sit down to write the blog’s 200th post, I have a much clearer vision of what I want to do with Holistic Mamas. In … Continue reading
Natural Remedies for Grief
I had never lost anyone close to me until I lost my BFF, Christine. Actually, I take that back – I lost my grandfather in November 2004, but that felt different because a) he had been ill for quite some time; b) he was 90 years old and had lived a long and full life; and c) I had a chance to say goodbye. Yes, I did mourn him, but his death did not throw me into a state of shock and grief the way Christine’s did. Christine was healthy, 38 years old, and left suddenly and unexpectedly. There was … Continue reading

Shanghai’d!
We are safely in Shanghai, after a (mostly) uneventful plane ride. I’ve learned several things since getting on that China-bound plane, and have decided to list them according to my stream of consciousness: My baby is not one of those that sleeps on planes. She’s one of those that poops on planes. This time, she pooped twice. Big, yucky, up-the-back poopies that took both her Mom and Dad to change. She slept only 1.5 hours out of the 12 hour long flight, and since she wanted only Mommy the whole way here, Mommy didn’t get any sleep at all, either. … Continue reading

Why Do I Blog About Natural Remedies in the First Place?
I was telling a new acquaintance that I blog about herbs, essential oils, homeopathy, flower essences, and other natural healing tools for my fellow “naturally-minded” Moms. She looked at me kind of funny and flat out said, “Why?” Good question, I thought. Exactly why AM I so passionate about alternative medicine and modalities? Why do I think it’s so important that as soon as my baby drifts off to sleep each night (which takes FOREVER), I make a beeline for my computer and start blogging away (instead of, say, taking a breather and watching the latest episode of Project Runway … Continue reading
Who the heck first figured this out?
I was making my gratitude list today, and one item I put on the list was how thankful I am to have started down the path of learning about herbs, holistic medicine, aromatherapy, homeopathy, flower essences, etc., when a hilarious memory jumped into my mind. Last year, I had a bout of postpartum BPPV – Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. For ten weeks, I felt like I was walking around on the deck of a ship at sea. And not a big cruise ship, either. More like a dinghy. Traditional medicine did not work for me (how surprising!), so I went … Continue reading

Good remedies for minor burns
My mother-in-law is kind of a skeptic about all things holistic, aromatherapeutic, herbal, or just plain healthy. She likes to say, “Mare has a lot of concoctions.” But, since she’s living with us to help take care of the Little Apple, I want to take care of her, too. A couple months ago, she burned her finger by grabbing onto a hot pan (she missed the handle, basically). I heard a big, “Ow!” in the kitchen and went running. She was rinsing her finger in cold water when I found her. “I can help you with that, Mama,”I said. “Don’t … Continue reading

A good remedy for canker sores
I often joke that I have two babies, a Little one (the Apple) and a Big one (my hubby). My Big baby gets more canker sores (mouth ulcers) than anyone I’ve ever known. It annoys him to end. It annoys me too because it seems like every time I go to give him a quick peck on the lips, he says, “No, don’t kiss me – I have a sore.” And then he flips down his lip to show me the big, sometimes white, sometimes yellow, ALWAYS ugly, painful, throbbing mess. A very PAINFUL method that my mother used to … Continue reading
