Ask Dr: Marcel: How to Make Your Own Breastmilk Replacement Formula

PediatricNDMarcelHernandez

Reprinted with permission from “Pediatric Nutrition and Natural Health Protocols,” by Dr. Marcel Hernandez, ND Nothing can really replace mother’s milk. However, situations may arise when a mother cannot naturally meet her baby’s needs, as in cases of insufficient production or severe mastitis. Store-bought formulas are high in various forms of sugar and contain chemicals and high antigen foods that may compromise a child’s immune system. The formulas listed below were developed by Dr. William Mitchell of Seattle. Dr. Mitchell, one of the co-founders of Bastyr University, has been a mentor and role model to many naturopathic physicians. These formulas will … Continue reading

Another Do-It-Yourself at Home Beauty & Skin Care Secret: Making Your Own Aromatherapy Facial Masks

masking-woman

Today, I’m going to talk about how to make a clarifying mask (this one pulls impurities from the skin, and as such, is good for oily, acne-prone skin) and a hydrating mask (this one moisturizes, soothes, and nourishes). How to Make a Clarifying, Detoxifying Mask Using Clay There are many kinds of clays suitable for facial masks: white kaolin clay, fuller’s earth, rose clay, yellow clay, and green clay. My favorite is the last one, French green clay, which is the finest and widely available from stores specializing in homemade remedies and cosmetics (like Mountain Rose Herbs). What I do … Continue reading

Do-It-Yourself at Home Beauty & Skin Care Secret: Aromatherapy Facial Toners

Facial-Toner

I guess I’ve got facials on the brain. Earlier this week, I posted about the benefits of essential oil facial steams, and today, I’m back to talk about facial toners. Before I owned a spa, I used to think that facial toners were one of those unnecessary items that the esthetician tried to sell me just to line her pockets. Not true. It turns out that toners are a very important part of your skin care regime, because they help to a) remove excess makeup; b) balance the acid mantle on your face (that the cleanser has usually taken off); … Continue reading

Home Remedy for Stinky Diaper Pails

How to deodorize a stinky diaper pail

Whoo-eee! If you’re using conventional diapers (i.e., non-cloth), then you know that that diaper pail sure can get stinky. The one in my house is so nasty, it could wake the dead. That is why we put it near the front door, so that it can knock out guests as they walk in, enabling us to ransack their pockets for extra cash. Just kidding. Not really. We use compostable diapers and have a compostable diaper service pick ours up every week, but just because we’re being environmentally friendly doesn’t mean that that pervasive stink doesn’t still waft itself into our … Continue reading

Sunday Health Tip: Come to your SENSES…or, the Six Pillars of Natural Health & Wellness

SENSES is an acronym I came up with for remembering the six pillars of natural health: Stress Management, Exercise, Nutrition, Sleep, Elimination, and Sunlight/Fresh Air. If I’m being honest, though, if I were to put them in order of importance, it would be: Nutrition, Exercise, Elimination, Sleep, Sunlight/Fresh Air, and Stress Management. But that uses up all the vowels too early and NEESSS would have no mnemonic value whatsoever. So, SENSES it is. Stress Management: Let’s face it, stress is an inescapable part of modern life. In fact, we wouldn’t even want to escape all stress, because some stress is … Continue reading

Sunday Health Tip: How to Use a Dry Brush for a Good Immune System and Great Skin

For seven years I owned a wellness spa, and while it had its ups and downs, one of the “ups” was that I got daily lessons in natural health and learned easy, effective ways to support my immune system. One of my favorite techniques for immune system support was (and IS) dry brushing. In fact, dry brushing has so many benefits and is so good for the immune system that I mandated that all of my therapists perform this technique on clients as part of every body treatment that occurred at my spa! (In your mind, please play dramatic, triumphant … Continue reading

How to Change a Poopie Diaper on the Airplane

First, realize and accept this Universal Law: that all babies like to poop into a clean diaper. So don’t be surprised to have that unique doody scent wafting your way immediately after you have just changed your baby. Second, throw in the fact that you are flying across country for 6 hours and 6 minutes on an A-319, which for the uninitiated, is like flying in a cigarette holder with wings. Which means, there is just the one aisle, and everyone on the plane, seemingly, has to use the lavatory at the same time your baby has pooped. So get … Continue reading
